ACT for physical health problems
An introductory skills workshop
If you’re a health psychologist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, doctor, or coach who works with individuals with chronic physical health conditions, you know first-hand the challenges that people with a long-term physical health condition, or chronic illness face. Living with a chronic illness can impact nearly every aspect of a person’s life, from their relationships and job to their finances and overall wellbeing.
That’s why we’re excited to offer an introductory level skills workshop on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for physical health problems. This workshop is designed specifically for individuals like you who work with clients who have chronic physical health conditions such as arthritis, asthma, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, among others.
During this workshop, you’ll learn essential ACT skills that you can use to help your clients:
- Develop a clearer sense of purpose based on their own values and what matters most to them
- Learn skills to promote greater acceptance and compassion associated with emotional responses to their condition that can’t be changed, while taking committed action to change the things that are within their control
- Develop methods to unhook from difficult thoughts, worries and ruminations about health and illness
- Try new ways of doing things and hold onto the strategies that work best for them
- Manage difficult thoughts and feelings that can arise in the context of a chronic illness
Dr Ray Owen will guide you through the essential components of the ACT approach and help you develop practical skills that you can use to support your clients in their recovery.
What you will learn
In this workshop, Ray will introduce the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) model as a way of understanding and addressing the challenges of living with health problems. Participants will learn about the ideas behind the model, the evidence base supporting its use, and the core processes of ACT as applied to physical health difficulties. Through case studies and experiential exercises, participants will have the opportunity to try out some initial ACT techniques that can be quickly and effectively incorporated into their practice.
Who would benefit from this workshop?
This 12 hour workshop is aimed at practitioners supporting people living with long-term physical health problems including psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors and mental health practitioners, mental health nurses and coaches.
