Have you ever gotten stuck trying to do defusion?  You use your favourite method – the one that worked so well with your previous client –  but it misses the mark, or fails miserably, or backfires and makes things even worse. And then you start getting fused!!!

For sure you have; we all have! And that’s hardly surprising. Because there are so many potential barriers to defusion.

For example, clients may misunderstand the purpose, or see no point in it, or find it invalidating. Or they may complain they’ve “tried it before” and “it didn’t work”. Or they may be fused with helplessness and hopelessness, and therefore unwilling to try it. Or they may be so extremely fused that common defusion strategies are virtually useless. Or they may get held back by experiential avoidance. Or they may have tightly held beliefs (sometimes religious) about the problematic nature of negative thoughts and the need to eliminate them. Or they may be struggling with intrusive or obsessive thoughts. Or they may say “I don’t have any thoughts”. Or they may be unable to “see” or “hear” their thoughts. Or they may be getting entangled in cognitive processes like worrying, ruminating and obsessing, for which standard defusion methods are insufficient.

And so on, and so on. (If you’ve been counting, you’ll note that’s already more than ten common barriers – but we thought ten sounded like a good number for the webinar title.) The good news is, there’s a small number of principles and strategies for defusion that, once you fully understand how to use them, will allow you to help both yourself and your clients overcome just about any barrier you ever encounter.

In this webinar you will learn:

  • The most common (more than ten) barriers to defusion – and how to overcome them
  • How to use functional analysis to increase your effectiveness
  • How to work with all the different forms that cognitions can take.
  • How to prevent invalidation or misunderstandings
  • A 5-step conversational process to defuse from just about anything
  • “Hard core” defusion techniques, for the most deeply entrenched, sticky, tricky fusion
  • And more!

Suitable for intermediate and advanced level. (Basic ACT knowledge is assumed).
