Facing the Storm with Dr Ray Owen
FREE workshop recording
Bad things can happen to any of us. And sometimes, no matter how much we might try, there’s nothing we can do to stop them.
But that doesn’t mean you have to be helpless; no matter how bad the situation you’re about to deal with, there are things you can do to cope better – to make sense of it, adjust to the changes, make the best decisions, deal with other people, cope with the emotions. Things you can do to help you face the storm that’s coming.
People with life-threatening illnesses do this all the time: the rest of us can learn from them.
This is a practical skills focused half-day workshop to help people skilfully manage the storms of life such as sudden changes, loss of health and death. It is based on the new, revised edition of the popular and acclaimed self-help book “Facing the Storm” in which Clinical Psychologist Dr Ray Owen shows how lessons learned in the field of Palliative Care – where people are faced with one of the worst prospects of all – can help people to deal with major crises in their life. Or to support someone else who’s facing a crisis of their own.
This workshop is suitable for:
- Anyone who supports individuals going through major life crises – including health and social care professionals, community support workers, spiritual care specialists
- It doesn’t assume previous knowledge of specific psychological approaches (e.g. CBT, ACT, Mindfulness)
This half-day workshop will:
- Show how the perspectives and approaches that help in palliative care can help in other major life crises too – drawing on CBT, ACT and Mindfulness traditions
- Illustrate the metaphor of Facing the Storm as a way of helping people make sense of their situation and take action that makes a difference
- Demonstrate some simple techniques that can help
- Discuss ways of using the book Facing the Storm as ‘guided self-help’
When there’s a storm coming towards you, and you can’t escape it, then you have to prepare to face it. Here’s how.
Please note – the e-copy of the book was only available to participants who registered for the live event.

Reviews of Facing the Storm (2nd edition)
When peaceful seas are not the full story, this wise book shows you what to do: learn, care, plan, choose, do what’s possible, adjust. You may not control the storm, but you control how you relate to it. Highly recommended.

Just what I know to expect from Dr Ray Owen, a beautifully crafted, deep dive into the extraordinary traumas we humans face and how to deal with them; wise psychological strategies, ‘simple by design’, that work, even when you feel completely overwhelmed
