From self esteem to self acceptance
using relational frame theory to build a healthier self
It’s almost impossible for our clients to improve their well-being unless we resolve self-esteem issues and build their self-acceptance skills. A self-relationship that is dominated by unhelpful self-concepts will hinder both emotional health and values-based actions. However, if we help our clients to nurture a healthy, flexible relationship with themselves, embracing who they are in a non-judgemental way, then they can begin to be guided by their own values and learn to thrive.
RFT-informed selfing interventions, designed to reduce the dominance of these unhelpful self-concepts, are crucial for increasing flexibility and laying the foundation for self-acceptance. Drawing on the model outlined in his book, The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Self Esteem (co-authored with Richard Bennett, New Harbinger, 2020), Joe will train participants on one key component of the model: strengthening hierarchical framing and flexible perspective taking in relation to unhelpful dominant self-concepts.
The training will emphasise case conceptualisation and skill development, providing clear and measurable methods for promoting self-acceptance. Joe will use client examples and demonstrations to offer concrete examples of how this work can be conducted, maximising learning opportunities.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the key principles of RFT and hierarchical deictic relations as they apply to self-acceptance.
2. Apply knowledge of the functional relationships between the self and a unhelpful dominant self-concept to develop an over-arching metaphor to aid case conceptualisation.
3. Use two perspective taking and hierarchical framing techniques to loosen attachment to unhelpful self-concepts and promote self-acceptance.
