Working with anxiety in 5-12 year olds

Using the ACT Kidflex to reduce fears and worries

Access is for 6 months after purchase
2 hours (2 CE credits)
Introductory level skills workshop
Experienced ACT practitioners

If you treat children struggling with mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety, you’ll know that approaches designed for adults do not work with younger clients and sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start.

Anxiety disorders can have a significant impact on a child’s development and ability to grow and flourish in life. Helping equip the child and their caregivers to respond effectively to anxiety is a key role for practitioners. ACT helps children to strengthen psychological flexibility in the face of anxiety, to turn towards anxiety and let it be, and to build self-compassion, so they can do what matters most to them.

Our speaker, Dr Tamar Black, has extensive experience as an educational and developmental psychologist, and her very practical approach using a child-friendly version of the ACT Hexaflex will introduce you to proven, age-appropriate strategies. Whether you are new to using ACT with children or an experienced practitioner looking to hone your skills, you’ll enjoy her refreshing approach.

About this workshop

This highly practical workshop introduces you to the new ACT Kidflex, a developmentally appropriate adaptation of the ACT Hexaflex.  You’ll learn how to use quick, simple, and engaging techniques for reducing the effects of anxiety-related issues such as difficulties attending school, social arrangements and other extra-curricular activities.

In this workshop, you will learn:
  • How to develop home tasks as part of the child’s everyday routine.
  • Techniques to help children step out of their comfort zone and become more resilient by engaging in actions they’ve previously avoided.
  • Methods to use simple and developmentally appropriate language for using ACT with children.
  • How to describe experiential exercises suitable for children for each ACT process.
  • Ways to do ACT with children rather than talk ACT.

You will also learn strategies on how to recruit parents and caregivers as ‘ACT coaches’, so that they are able to use simple techniques to reinforce what the child learns with their therapist.
