4 steps to arrive at a difficult conversation

Having the right approach to difficult conversations can make all the difference to how they unfold. Being able to arrive at them, and conduct them effectively isn’t just a therapeutic skill either, these types of talks happen across personal relationships and in professional settings such as the workplace, for feedback sessions, negotiations and conflict resolutions.

In order to conduct difficult conversations correctly we have recommended four simple steps that can help you arrive:

  1. Ground yourself: Spend a few moments observing your environment.
  2. Set your intention: Remind yourself of your goals for the conversation.
  3. Connect to your values: Reflect on what makes this conversation important to you.
  4. Engage willingness: Accept that feeling uneasy is part of the journey.
