In this video clip taken from our ‘Expert tips for ACT‘ series on YouTube, ACT trainer and clinical psychologist Kevin Vowles discusses how understanding clients and setting realistic and achievable targets can be an important process when using ACT for chronic pain. A simple question such as “If this treatment works for you, what would I see you doing on a day when treatment was working?” and then listening out for the client’s overt behavioural responses can give us powerful signposts to check in against and assess if treatment is working for them.
KEVIN E VOWLES is a key figure in the development and adaptation of ACT for chronic pain with work cited by the American Psychological Association’s Division of Clinical Psychology in their listing of ACT for chronic pain as an intervention with strong research support: the highest possible grading. His work is also cited by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in their recommendation of ACT for the treatment of chronic pain.
