Disobey on purpose: A defusion exercise – Jenna Ashford

In this video from our YouTube “Expert tips” playlist, sport and exercise psychologist Jenna Ashford, explains the transformative ACT tool called “disobey on purpose.” She guides viewers through an exercise that helps individuals realise they don’t have to believe or follow all their thoughts. By encouraging participants to confront limiting thoughts like “I can’t stand up”, and then standing up anyway, she illustrates that thoughts don’t dictate actions. This practice empowers people to live their lives fully, despite challenging thoughts.

JENNA ASHFORD is a Chartered Sport & Exercise Psychologist with a broad range of experience working with athletes from many different sports, from elite level to school sport. She was part of the team of psychologists at the FA who developed the high performance culture within England Football teams.
