This metaphor is a variation on ‘feeding the tiger’. It is a metaphor that symbolises avoidance, the temporary relief of feeding the dinosaur and sending it away, is actually making the problem bigger. This is similar to how anxiety makes its presence known, it demands undivided attention. Using this story can help clients acknowledge the presence of anxiety but embark on a different path.
When we avoid anxiety, we unknowingly sacrifice meaningful aspects of our lives—the things that bring us joy and hold true significance. Although we may experience temporary relief, anxiety resurfaces with greater strength and voracity each time, ensnaring us in an unyielding cycle. Rather than fuelling anxiety’s power by continuing to feed it, this metaphor shows how adopting a slower pace and creating space around it can empower us instead. Embracing the discomfort and actively listening and learning from it can become a catalyst for personal growth.. While avoidance may offer momentary respite, it ultimately worsens the issue. These messages are important to acknowledge, even though it can be challenging to undertake.
