How to introduce the ‘Dropping the anchor’ exercise when clients can’t communicate – Russ Harris

In this short clip taken from our ‘Expert tips for ACT’ series. Russ Harris talks through how he introduces the ‘dropping the anchor’ exercise to a client who can’t communicate during Trauma-focused ACT sessions.

The aim of the exercise is not to get rid of any unpleasant thoughts or feelings, or to ‘feel good’. The aim is to bring your attention to what is most important in the here and now, living in the present moment. The idea is that you ‘drop an anchor’ so that the storm doesn’t sweep you away, enabling you to get present moment awareness and engage fully to get the most out of life. For audio exercises and walk throughs of the exercise see our ‘dropping the anchor’ resource page.

DR RUSS HARRIS  is a world-renowned trainer of acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT) and author of the international best-selling self-help book ‘The Happiness Trap’.
