In this clip, taken from our ‘Expert tips for ACT’ series, expert CFT (compassion-focused therapy) trainer Russell Kolts shares what he says if confronted with clients who think compassion is a sign of weakness. Compassion isn’t something ‘soft or mushy’, but instead in CFT we see it as the willingness to engage with suffering or struggle, with a commitment to help ourselves work out what to do.
RUSSELL KOLTS is a Professor of Psychology at Eastern Washington University and Director of the Inland Northwest Compassionate Mind Center in Spokane, Washington, USA. He has authored or co-authored scientific articles on various areas of psychology and has written several books about compassion-focused therapy and compassion.
