The workability worksheet has been designed to help individuals suffering from creative hopelessness, to assess the functional impact of their thoughts and behaviours, determining whether they are helpful or unhelpful in achieving a rich and meaningful life. It walks the client through key questions such as:
- What have you tried?
- How are your strategies working?
- What’s the cost?
- Be kind to yourself
- Are you open to trying something different?
- What now do you notice?

The concept of “workability” is central to ACT and plays a significant role in guiding its therapeutic approach. It refers to the effectiveness or usefulness of a particular thought, behaviour, or strategy in helping individuals live a meaningful and fulfilling life.
The emphasis is on evaluating whether a specific thought or behaviour is helpful in moving towards one’s values and desired outcomes, rather than focusing on whether it is true or accurate. From this, individuals can gain insight into the consequences of their actions and make conscious choices based on their values. If a particular thought or behavior is found to be unworkable, ACT provides various mindfulness and acceptance-based techniques to help individuals let go of unhelpful patterns and make room for more adaptive responses.
