Michael Twohig

Professor Michael P. Twohig, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and Professor in the Department of Psychology at Utah State University, where he co-directs the USU ACT Research Group. He is internationally recognised for his work on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), particularly in the treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and related conditions such as Tourette’s Disorder, Trichotillomania, and chronic skin picking.

Prof. Twohig described his research as focussing on developing effective, evidence-based treatments for socially important problems, rather than tied to specific topographies. His clinical interests are broad, including developmental disabilities, substance use, eating disorders, problematic pornography viewing, stigma, and multicultural issues. He draws on behavioural and contextual approaches, including ACT, CBT, and exposure-based therapies with a strong focus on both treatment effectiveness and understanding mechanisms of change.

He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, authored several books, and is a past president of the Association for Contextual Behavioural Science. Prof. Twohig’s workshops combine theory, research, and hands-on clinical skill development, equipping therapists with tools they can use immediately in practice.
