Five rules for FAP (Functional analytic psychotherapy) – Mavis Tsai

Functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on using the therapeutic relationship as a central means to promote meaningful and lasting behavioural change.

In this short video taken from our Expert tips for ACT playlist from our YouTube channel Mavis Tsai gives us her 5 rules from Mavis Tsai that can deepen this therapist-client relationship:

    1. Be aware of clinically relevant behaviours (CRBs)
    2. Be courageous and evocative
    3. Reinforce progress genuinely
    4. Be aware of your own impact
    5. Generalise gains to daily life

MAVIS TSAI is a clinical psychologist and senior research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for Science of Social Connection. She is the co-creator, with the late Robert Kohlenberg, PhD, ABPP, of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP), a treatment that harnesses the power of the therapeutic relationship to transform clients’ lives.
