The Heart of ACT – An insight into training with Robyn D. Walser

Guest blog from Robyn Walser

After nearly three decades of practicing and teaching ACT, one of the most important lessons I have learned is that the heart of ACT is not found in its techniques, metaphors, or protocols. Rather, it is found in a way of being with another human being.

Many clinicians first encounter ACT through its exercises: the passengers on the bus metaphor, leaves on a stream, values clarification, or creative hopelessness. These interventions can be powerful and transformative. Yet over time, I have come to believe that what makes ACT effective is not the exercise itself, but the stance from which it is offered. ACT is less about delivering interventions and more about cultivating a particular quality of presence, one characterised by openness, curiosity, courage, humility, and a willingness to remain in contact with what is difficult without rushing to solve, fix, or escape it.

This has important implications for how we understand the therapeutic relationship. In ACT, the relationship is not merely the context in which treatment occurs; it is one of the primary places where psychological flexibility is practiced, modelled, and experienced. When therapists notice their own urges to control, reassure, avoid, persuade, or rescue and instead choose to remain present, vulnerable, and values-guided, they are not stepping outside of ACT, they are embodying its central processes.

I often tell trainees that clients learn as much from how we sit with suffering as from what we say about it. The therapeutic encounter becomes a shared space in which both therapist and client are invited into greater openness, awareness, and engagement with what matters. In this sense, the heart of ACT is not a technique to be mastered, but a way of meeting human suffering with flexibility, compassion, and courage.
