The ACT fidelity measure (ACT-FM)

The ACT fidelity measure (ACT-FM) is designed for clinicians experienced in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to assess fidelity to the approach in various contexts, such as self-evaluation or research.

It focuses on four key areas:

  • Therapist stance
  • Open response style
  • Aware response style
  • Engaged response style

Each area includes items that evaluate therapist behaviours as either consistent or inconsistent with ACT principles. For instance, an ACT-consistent behaviour encourages clients to explore their thoughts and feelings, while an inconsistent behaviour promotes positive thinking as a treatment goal. Clinicians may record both types of items within the same session, as they are not direct opposites. Inconsistent items can be omitted if not relevant to the evaluation.
