Compassion-focused therapy for anger

An intermediate level skills workshop

Intermediate level skills workshop
Recording available for 6 months
Experienced practitioners and clinicians

Course Description

Problematic anger can have far-reaching consequences for clients, causing significant harm in various aspects of their lives. It can strain relationships, hinder professional opportunities, and create rifts within friendships and family dynamics, ultimately leaving individuals feeling isolated and alone. Moreover, problematic anger often generates a profound sense of shame, further isolating the individual. Working with anger can be particularly challenging, as it can provide individuals with a sense of control and power that they may struggle to relinquish, despite the severe consequences it may bring.

Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) offers innovative approaches to address problematic anger, helping individuals break free from the anger cycle and learn effective ways to communicate their needs, while fostering and strengthening relationships.

About this workshop

Join Professor Russell Kolts, renowned expert in compassion-focused therapy (CFT),  leading authority in working with anger and  author of “The compassionate-mind guide to managing your anger” and “The anger workbook”. This highly practical and informative training session promises to revolutionise your approach when working with clients struggling with anger issues.

This intermediate level workshop is specifically designed for practitioners who already possess some familiarity with the CFT model and aim to apply compassion-focused strategies to problematic anger and anger-related issues.

During the workshop, we will explore the dynamics and maintenance of anger problems from a CFT perspective, emphasising non-shaming approaches to help clients understand and work through their anger. We will delve into the reasons why anger problems can be challenging to address, explore techniques to assist clients in taking responsibility for their anger-related behaviours, and guide clients in cultivating a commitment to change their relationship with anger. Essential tools will be provided to support clients in incorporating these changes into their daily lives.

Throughout the workshop, you will have the opportunity to acquire key skills, including:

  • Developing a CFT conceptualisation of anger and effectively communicating this to clients.
  • Assisting clients in recognising their anger triggers, cycles, and responses.
  • Building, strengthening, and utilising the therapeutic relationship when working with clients experiencing anger.
  • Facilitating the transition from the threatened mind to the compassionate mind.
  • Engaging clients in exercises to strengthen their compassionate self.
  • Equipping clients with strategies to manage anger-related shame, enabling them to align their actions with their desired self-image.

And much more!

Who will benefit from this workshop?

This workshop is designed for practitioners who work with clients who experience problematic anger and already know about CFT or use it to some extent. The workshop will assume that participants already have a good grasp of the basics of CFT, and have some experience of applying it in their practice as the fundamentals of the CFT model will not be covered.

If you are interested in learning about the basics of CFT mode, check out our on-demand workshop, CFT in practice: compassion-focused therapy skills for beginners with Russell Kolts.
