Workability in ACT

What is workability?

The concept of workability is an important aspect of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which focuses on helping people live a more fulfilling life. Workability is the idea that the actions we take should be evaluated based on whether they move us in the direction of our chosen values. This approach encourages people to step outside of fundamental truths and focus on what is important to them, rather than getting caught up in debates about the accuracy of their thoughts or beliefs.

For example, if someone has a thought like “deep down I’m broken,” this may be an accurate reflection of their psychological state, but it is more important to evaluate whether this thought is getting in the way of them doing what is important to them. If the thought does not interfere with their ability to connect with what matters to them, then there is no need for intervention. However, if the thought is preventing them from living a fulfilling life, then ACT becomes very interested in helping them change their relationship with that thought.

Workability also helps to reduce judgment and validate people’s actions. Instead of labelling actions as right or wrong, workability evaluates actions based on their effectiveness in achieving the person’s values. This approach helps people to connect with their values and make mindful choices that are consistent with those values, rather than simply reacting to their thoughts and emotions.

Workability is an important concept in ACT that emphasises the importance of evaluating our actions based on whether they move us in the direction of our chosen values, rather than getting caught up in debates about the accuracy of our thoughts or beliefs. This approach helps people to connect with what is important to them and make mindful choices that lead to a more fulfilling life.
